Wilfredo Saavedra survived torture and prison, now also Covid-19
The Peruvian lawyer and advocate for human rights today celebrates his 65th birthday
In the Fritz Bauer Library with its stories of resistance and survival, the story of Wilfredo Saavedra, written by Dr. Anna Barrera Vivero, can now also be followed. In close cooperation with this brave lawyer and advocate for human rights, Anna Barrera Vivero has written down his courageous path in life.
The GLS Zukunftsstiftung Entwicklung is dedicated to the lawyer and his commitment. With great respect for WILFREDO SAAVEDRA and his tireless, self-sacrificing work, the editorial staff of the Fritz Bauer Blog shares the congratulations of GLS Zukunftsstiftung Entwicklung on his 65th birthday.
According to his records, since 2000, attorney Wilfredo Saavedra has provided free legal advice and defense to over 2,300 farmers and environmental activists in the Cajamarca region who have been mistreated, attacked or accused by mining companies and/or government institutions.
We are honored and grateful that his history and commitment are documented in the Fritz Bauer Library and will continue to pass them on.

„The Corona virus has not spared Wilfredo Saavedra. At the beginning of June, he was diagnosed with COVID-19 and underwent severe treatment for four months. Because of the bronchial infection that he had developed after the long years of hard imprisonment, his family was seriously concerned about his chances of recovery. Together with approximately twelve other people, consisting of doctors, nurses, members of neighbourhood committees, they built a network of support around him, providing him with the necessary medicine and financial means to undergo the treatment. Fortunately, he was able to recover. At the end of October, he resumed his work and turned his time and energy to a new case of infringement of human rights in the province of Condebamba.
On November 13th, Wilfredo Saavedra is turning sixty-five. Together with his family, colleagues and the numerous people that lawyer Saavedra has defended in the course of his career of over thirty-seven years, the GLS Future Foundation for Development is wishing him the best of health and the best of luck with his valuable work for the protection of human and environmental rights!“

En la Biblioteca Fritz Bauer con sus historias de resistencia y supervivencia, la historia de Wilfredo Saavedra, escrita por la Dra. Anna Barrera Vivero, ahora también puede seguirse. En estrecha colaboración con esta brava abogada y defensora de los derechos humanos, Anna Barrera Vivero ha escrito su valiente camino en la vida.
La GLS Zukunftsstiftung Entwicklung está dedicada al abogado y a su compromiso. Con gran respeto por WILFREDO SAAVEDRA y su incansable y abnegado trabajo, la redacción del Blog de Fritz Bauer comparte las felicitaciones de GLS Zukunftsstiftung Entwicklung por su 65º cumpleaños.
Según sus registros, desde el año 2000, el Abogado Wilfredo Saavedra ha brindado asesoría legal y ha defendido gratuitamente a más de 2,300 campesinos y activistas ambientales de la región de Cajamarca, quienes han sido acusados, maltratados o agredidos por la corporación minera y/o por las autoridades gubernamentales por sus acciones civiles en defensa de sus derechos humanos y ambientales.
Nos sentimos honrados y agradecidos de que su historia y su compromiso estén documentados en la Biblioteca Fritz Bauer y continuaremos compartiéndolos.

„El virus Corona también afectó la salud de Wilfredo Saavedra. Al inicio de junio, le diagnosticaron COVID-19 y fue sometido a un tratamiento severo durante cuatro meses. Debido a la infección bronquial que había desarrollado después de muchos años de duro encarcelamiento, su familia estaba seriamente preocupada por sus posibilidades de recuperación. Junto a aproximadamente doce personas más, entre médicos, enfermeras, miembros de comités vecinales, construyeron una red de apoyo a su alrededor, brindándole la medicina y los medios económicos necesarios para someterse al tratamiento. Afortunadamente, pudo recuperarse. A fines de octubre retomó su labor y dedicó su tiempo y energía a un nuevo caso de vulneración de los derechos humanos en la provincia de Condebamba.
El 13 de noviembre Wilfredo Saavedra cumplirá sesenta y cinco años. Junto a su familia, colegas y las numerosas personas que el abogado Saavedra ha defendido a lo largo de su carrera de más de treinta y siete años, la Fundación GLS Futuro para el Desarrollo le desea lo mejor en salud y la mejor suerte con su valiosa labor por la protección de los derechos humanos y ambientales!”
