Places of Remembrance in Bochum

The crimes of the Nazis and their victims

As part of a students’ project, six students at the Ruhr University Bochum have been studying the history of Bochum during the National Socialist regime and have created a collection and digital processing of Bochum’s places of remembrance.

The many results of their work, which have been published under the name ‘Learning by Remembering‘ (Lernen durch Erinnern), can be accessed on a website created especially for this purpose. The core of the project is the ‘Map of Remembrance’, on which more than 550 places have been painstakingly listed, some with explanations. The places listed on the map commemorate the time of National Socialism in Bochum and the surrounding area as well as the numerous citizens of the city of Bochum who fell victim to National Socialist crimes.
